Year 5 Glaramara Residential march 2018
Monday 5th March 2018
It was my first day on my class residential and it was amazing.
First, I went into school and we got into our groups and had an hour drive to Tebay Services where we had a drink and a snack. After that we carried on to the Lake District Wildlife Park where we spent 4 hours. We saw a variety of different animals but my favourite was the otter who always wanted food from the keeper (Vicky).
Next, I went back on the coach and travelled even further to Glaramara. When we arrived there we met a really nice and funny man named Simon who paired us up into partners. We then went to our rooms and had to practise a fire drill. Finally, we started unpacking and we changed shoes and went for tea. I had spaghetti bolognese and for afters I had a delicious chocolate and vanilla mousse.

I woke up this morning feeling excited. I went onto the coach with Amy and we annoyed Miss Taylor by singing Christmas songs. A few hours later we arrived at an amazing wild life centre. We saw meerkats, gibbons, parrots, 3 birds of pray, rabbits (2), red pandas, otters and lemurs. It was so much fun! Soon after we arrived at Glaramara. The hotel was amazing and so was the food.

The first bit of the day was my absolute favourite part because I got to stroke a sheep and hold all its chopped off features.

The owner of the farm (Dan) told us lots of different facts about sheep. My favourite fact was that his sheep have a red patch on them so the farmers know which sheep belongs to which farm. When we got back from orienteering in the afternoon I went and had a shower. Guess what ….. I WAS IN THE SHOWER WHEN THEY SHOUTED DINNER…. AAAAAHHHHGGG!

I was excited to see all of the different animals. The best part was feeding the sheep which was so fun, slobbery, but fun.

The first activity we did was going to a farm. It was quite strange because I had never been to one before. It stank a lot too!

Your children have been amazing and are a real credit to you. I have never taken a school this early in the year before and I was a bit worried about the temperature of the air and the water. The children have just got on with it, not moaned and really enjoyed the activities. They have especially liked Ghyll scrambling (scrambling up a river and over rocks) even with the small amounts of snow still on the banks and the rather cold water!!! I am really proud of them and I am sure you are too!

Today has been awesome! In the morning I woke up feeling full of energy and looking forward to finding out our new activities for the day. I picked warm, fleecy clothes that I could wear without caring if they if got wet or muddy. Before breakfast Jacob and I were trying to complete a challenge… a 1000 piece puzzle. In the afternoon we went ghyll scrambling. The hardest part was when we had to climb up a rock over a rapid waterfall. Everyone was freezing cold after we jumped into a massive pool of water. My hands felt like they were going to fall off. For tea I had chicken and rice but for desert I had raspberry cheesecake. They were both phenomenal!

Simon took us to a rock climbing place in Keswick called Kong. I sat and watched Simon demonstrate how to belay and then we got to go on the wall ourselves. I got to the top (well almost to the top) on most of the walls we went on and half way up the last wall. Near to the end of our climbing experience we got to go bouldering, which is climbing with a safety mat below and without a harness. That was so fun! I can’t wait to get home and tell my mum and dad all about it. In the afternoon we went canoeing. We had to stand up in the canoes and they were really wobbly. Later on we went further out and started to have some races. When we started to get cold we headed back to the shore and then travelled back to Glaramara.

After building our coracles we did archery. I scored 23. Archery was my most favourite thing that we did. Then we walked to the stream with the coracles. I went third, unfortunately I fell in
After canoeing we walked to the bus and Mr Burgess gave us some sweets because we didn’t whinge during canoeing. Tomorrow we will go home. I will miss Glaramara.

I had an incredible day today!

My two favourite activities were orienteering and ghyll scrambling. But ghyll scrambling was freezing cold! I am so sad to be leaving tomorrow but I can’t wait to see my family.

At boat building I built a sturdy (sort of) boat with my team. As a test I let Harry go first to see if it would hold up. After Harry sailed from side to side successfully I did it.

I was going ghyll scrambling this afternoon (I regretted being excited about this…). When we walked down to the rocky stream and got into the water I instantly froze!

At 9.30 I went to do canoeing with my team, team three to be precise. We went to a place called Star Wars Bay which was amazing. It was called that because the last scene is Star Wars the Force Awakens was filmed there.

This morning I woke up to a stunning view of the beautiful mountains. It was about 8.00am and I started to get ready for the exciting day ahead.
